Rezumat/Summary
Cartea prezintă o continuare a poveștii lui Maxim de Winter și a soției sale, personajele principale din volumul "Rebecca" de Daphne du Maurier. Încă de la început ni se sugerează că cei doi protagoniști au ales să se exileze în Europa, pe continent, după incendiul care a avut loc la Manderlay, însă după 10 ani ei sunt nevoiți să se întoarcă înapoi în Anglia, pentru a asista la înmormântarea surorii lui Maxim, Beatrice.
După ce petrec o perioadă de timp la casa soțului lui Beatrice, cei doi se hotărăsc să mai rămână puțin în Anglia și, mai apoi, să cumpere o casă în Scoția, unde să își întemeieze o familie.
Planurile lor sunt, însă, date peste cap de apariția vărului Rebeccăi (fosta soție a lui Maxim) și a doamnei Danvers (camerista și confidenta Rebeccăi) care sunt hotărâți să răzbune moartea Rebeccăi.
This book presents Susan Hill's opinion of how the book "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier should have ended, a sequel to the famous novel. The main characters of the book, Maxim de Winter and his wife have lived in a self imposed exile in Europe, on the continent, after Manderlay had burned in a fire. After 10 years of exile, they receive a letter informing them that Maxim's sister, Beatrice has died, so they decide to go back to England, to attend the funeral. After staying a while at Beatrice's husband's house, the couple travels to Scotland and, since his wife is so fond of the place, Maxim decides to buy a house there. Their plans are, however, postponed, due to the appearance of Mrs. Danvers (Rebecca's housekeeper and confident) and Mr. Favell (Rebecca's cousin), who are determined to find out the truth about Rebecca's (Maxim's first wife) death.
★★★ Nu e o carte rea, însă îi lipsește ceva care să mă fac să o îndrăgesc cu adevărat. Mi-a plăcut ideea de continuare a poveștii (finalul cărții "Rebecca" ne-a cam lăsat în suspans), însă nu mi se pare o continuare potrivită pentru volumul "Rebecca". Deși stilul adoptat de Susan Hill se potrivește cu cel al lui Daphne du Maurier, iar autoarea respectă informațiile din carte și linia poveștii, consider că a adoptat un ton mult prea pesimist în final. Eu sunt adepta finalurilor fericite și, decât o dramă, apreciez mai degrabă un final deschis.
★★★ I enjoyed this book, but there's something missing - that "thing" that makes me really like it. I liked the idea of a sequel ( the final pages of "Rebecca" left us hanging), but I don't consider this a proper sequel for "Rebecca". Even though Susan Hill's style is similar to Daphne du Maurier's style, and the author respects all the information we had from the original book and the story line, I consider that she adopted a very pessimistic tone in the end, that doesn't really fit in. I admit that I prefer happy endings and I prefer an open ending rather than a dramatic/sad one.
